Dr. Cyrus R. Teed’s utopian community of 200 followers began relocating from Chicago, Illinois to Florida in 1894. Dr. Teed took the name ‘Koresh,’ the Hebrew translation for Cyrus, meaning shepherd. The colonists believed that the entire universe existed within a giant, hollow sphere. The Koreshans built and operated a printing facility, boat works, cement works, sawmill, bakery, store and hostelry.

After the death of Dr. Teed in 1908 at the age of 69, membership of his religious group began to decline. In 1961, the four remaining members deeded 305 acres of their land to the state of Florida as a park and memorial. The Koreshan Unity Settlement Historic District, a.k.a. Koreshan Unity State Park, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

1.Lovers Key State Park

Lovers Key State Park is a 712-acre Florida State Park located on Lover’s Key and three other barrier islands—Black Island, Inner and Long Key. It is at 8700 Estero Blvd., Fort Myers Beach, between Big Carlos Pass and New Pass and 10.5 miles west of Interstate 75 on exit 116. The park lies within the city limits of Bonita Springs and is just north of Bonita Beach. The park uses a Fort Myers Beach zip code for address purposes.

First opening in 1936, the Everglades Wonder Gardens is a 3.5-acre botanical garden waiting to be explored. In addition to both local and world plants, the Gardens’ biggest draw is their flamingos. The Gardens also provide shelter to rescued birds and reptiles. Orchids, bamboo, and other flowers were soon added to the mix. 

More recently, the Gardens transitioned to non-profit status. With each new visit, guests will see updated enclosures and improved facilities. Feed the flamingos, and get up close at the re-designed Alligator Encounter, expected to re-open soon. The prior Alligator Encounter saw guests perched over a swinging bridge over the alligator enclosure. 

The Everglades Wonder Gardens’ new botanical gardens format is much more welcoming and worth a visit. 

Bonita Springs, a welcoming beach community in Southwest Florida between Fort Myers and Naples, is home to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida Nature Center. Fishing and outdoor activities are popular in Bonita Springs, as are the sparkling beaches. Bonita Springs also harbors Lovers Key State Park, a place so named because it once was an island so remote only lovers went to the trouble to seek its privacy. Today, you don’t need a boat to get to the beach. It’s easy to reach, but still not as well known as many other state parks.

The 2.5-mile beach is lined with natural vegetation and is perfect for beachcombing and birding. For some off-leash excitement there’s the rightly named Dog Beach Park. It’s one of Florida’s only no-leash beaches and a big hit for both locals and visitors. The secluded shoreline and shallow waters make Dog Beach Park one of our best pet-friendly beaches, and when you get the chance, there are even more spots to explore.
